Strictly speaking, he – Dannahue ‘Danny’ Clarke – is not just a gardener. He’s much, much more than that.

Danny is a professional garden designer, gardening maintenance practitioner, landscaper, greenscaper, cultivation expert, soil specialist, plantsman,… but still a gardener cum ‘friend of the earth’ beneath him.

And as his loyal, satisfied clients will testify – The Black Gardener is not entirely black! After all, we are talking here about a highly-trained, qualified, and experienced horticulturist who is blessed with the greenest of green fingers!

The Oxford-born son of a British Army officer, Dannahue first toyed with the idea of embarking on a military career. Then his passion for cricket, football and other sporting activities very nearly resulted in him becoming a professional sportsman.

But it was his early years visiting or living in exotic lands that undoubtedly inspired and dictated the career path he’d eventually take. In those diverse foreign countries of his formative days he acquired his design influences, while developing a deep passion for nature and the great outdoors. He wasn’t looking for gardening. Gardening found him. It became his first love.

For many happy and deeply satisfying years The Black Gardener has felt most at home where he belongs – working in gardens, doing what he does best – gardening and bespoke garden design.
